Re: Biggest Fish on a 308?

A repeat story with apologies. I caught a 32 inch long Carp in the Trent River, in Ontario about 1980. I was using a 308 on a Berkeley 5 1/2 foot light action rod with 4 pound test monofilament. We were in a boat and it took about an hour to bring the fish to net. G. Glen Simpson Dartmouth, Nova Sco...

I have repainted about 10 Mitchells, all of them 300’s. I have a 304, a 308 and a 486. None of these that I have repainted are in collector class, repainting them should give a new lease on their life. All of them had the aluminum parts treated with a corrosion treatment to remove deposits and coat ...

I just paint over it. When you paint beside the anti-reverse lever, slide it over and give another shot on the shadow where the lever covered or it will remain. I have masked these levers off on some and painted them on others. My 300s are fishers, not collectors.

I agree with what Ed has said in his post. I would recommend that you use a synthetic grease, like SUPERLUBE or VIPERGREASE (made by LOCTITE). Re: what is the simplest Mitchell spinning reel to work on?

A couple of points on this, regarding the 300. One of the reasons it is a good one to start with is that there are more 300s around than any other Mitchell model. They are mechanically different and a bit more complex than other models, like a 304 or a 308 which have planamatic gearing. If you can o...

If you do take on a 300, make sure that you find the shims, remove them, set them aside and replace them where they were found. They are easy to overlook.

I think the big difference between this and a 303 is the direction of head rotation and the main gear having a right hand thread for the 303. by switching the plates around, the the reel would still rotate as a 302, but you would be required to turn the handle so the top of it's rotation came toward...
