Mitchell 316

Post by BF60 »

Hi, looking for some information please. Was the Mitchell 316 made as a spinning reel? Or a surf reel?
Seems very large to be a spinning reel.
Any info greatly appreciated.

Good question. I always thought it was a surf reel. While looking through Dennis Roberts Value Guide on page 165 he mentions Mitchell called it a Salmon reel with new handle design. Maybe others who collect this reel will offer their thoughts. With a deep spool to hold more line I don't see why you can't use it as a surf reel. Just rinse it with fresh water afterwards. By the way, I use 301's and 307's surf fishing. Don't target anything over 5lbs BUT sometimes good size sharks don't know that.

Thanks very much for replying. Think I'll give it a go surf fishing.
