I have two cap 304 and wonder about differences
The first one is a heavily used on with serial number 080841 as I can decode it.... The other one comes in a blue wooden box and has no serial number. Also the face plate is somewhat thinner and the spool has a different ratchet mechanism from the more standard spool. See pics...

The serial number is not 080841 but 040841 and the spool mechanism has a pal as on the fly reels... I tried to use google photo image url, but the images are not visible. Probably not allowed by google.......

I'm going to guess both these reels were manufactured between 1954-1955. There is a good site with more information on the Mitchell Cap reels which you might like to visit https://mitchellcap.info/.
The box for the second reel looks to be a custom made box and it is really nice.
