308 issue

Post by geochaben »

I recently acquired a Mitchell 308 serial number 788382. The bail, trip lever and trip lever spring had to be replaced and it is working fine with one issue: the line spools unevenly like a cone, wider toward the front. Is there a fix for this issue?

I'm not sure what you mean by "wider at the front". Is it wider at the top of the spool than the bottom of the spool. If it is wider at the top, you could be missing the Teflon washer under the spool. Pull the drag knob off then the spool and you should find the Teflon washer laying on the clicker gear. If the washer is not there do a quick look on the bottom of the spool because it may be stuck there with grease.

Thanks for your response. There is a teflon washer where it should be. I am wondering if I need to add another washer.

I'm kind of late to the party, but another thing you should check is if the spool is seating all the way down on the shaft. Sometimes a small piece of debris gets in the hole on the bottom of the spool and prevents the spool from seating correctly.
