I thought Mates might be interested in this early ultra light spool for the Mitchell reel I was recently given.
I had thought these offered from about 1958 onwards from the paperwork I have seen, but I was told they might start earlier and sure enough, this one is so old it has the heart-shaped clicker inside.
It also has no metal tubing at the back of the axle mounting, just some further in for the release mechanism.
Early ultra light spool, earlier than I expected.

Re: Early ultra light spool, earlier than I expected.
The tubing that the axle goes through is all plastic too, apart from the short section for the spool release mechanism.
The weight saving is a mere 7 grams, barely noticeable in the hand and not at all on a reel.
So far, I haven't seen another of these, nor has anyone else I have asked.
Excuse the focus, but I wanted to get the 'France' on the hidden side in.

Interesting, what does the top side of the spools look like?
Thank you Scott

Sorry for image delay, one-handed at the moment. You will see it does not have the four spool face bars indicating a shallow reel like the later ones:
